Description

In the history of surfing, few moments are as unforgettable as the wave Nathan Fletcher rode during the Code Red swell that pummelled Teahupo’o in 2011. On this day, amidst the fury of the storm of the century, Nathan was about to take on one of the most dangerous and beautiful waves ever surfed. With nerves of steel, our captain, George Riou, expertly positioned our boat in the perfect spot, knowing the risks, but also knowing that this was the moment we had all come here for. As I sat in what could only be described as the “death zone,” a cascade of fears flooded my mind. But I knew my purpose: to capture this incredible event, to document history, and if I was lucky – live to tell the tale. I put my full trust in George, and then it came. The wave we had all been waiting for. Nathan dropped in, and from the moment he did, I knew this was different. The wave was massive, deep, and it held a raw power that few could fathom. Nathan, however, was in his element – perfectly poised and picking the exact right line. He approached the bowl at what seemed like a million miles an hour. As he surged forward, the barrel began to overtake him, and then, like a monster from the deep, a foam ball the size of a double-decker bus exploded from the heart of the wave. For what felt like an eternity, Nathan was surfing on that foam, riding the chaos as it tried to swallow him whole. The power, the danger, the beauty of it all captured in that one fleeting moment would go down as one of the greatest rides in surfing history.
